Die Alone Review

Synopsis:

Set in a dystopian future, Die Alone unfolds in a world ravaged by a virus that has turned the dead into ravenous, plant-like creatures. Ethan, struggling with amnesia, can only remember one thing clearly—his girlfriend, Emma, who has vanished. The last thing he recalls is crashing their car, and when he awakens, she’s gone.

His desperate search for her leads him to Mae (Carrie-Anne Moss), a tough survivalist who reluctantly takes him in but seems intent on blocking every attempt he makes to leave. Mae is determined to keep him from finding Emma, the one person his fragmented mind can’t forget.

Die Alone is a masterfully crafted film—a meditation on humanity, even as that humanity is eroded by desperation, greed, and the raw instinct to survive. Written and directed by Lowell Dean, the film transcends the expectations of the zombie genre. With a stellar cast including Douglas Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, Kimberly-Sue Murray, and Frank Grillo, it becomes a haunting exploration of love, loss, and the struggle to hold on when everything else falls apart.

It is streaming on Tubi, Prime, Apple and other streaming services.

My Take on the Movie:

Die Alone is a masterfully crafted film—a meditation on humanity, even as that humanity is eroded by desperation, greed, and the raw instinct to survive. As stated above the move becomes a haunting exploration of love, loss, and the struggle to hold on when everything else falls apart. The best thing about this movie is that it uses the zombie tropes and turn them on their head. For example, as the movie opens, the charater Ethan’s awaken from his crash into a world of confusion. This is very similar to other movies such as 28 Days Later, Resident Evil Apocalypse, and Cargo. 28 and RE use the waking up in the hospital to a crazed world while Cargo uses the accident scene to set up the journey. Also, the movie provides some payoffs that were at times obvious but with the red herrings but eventually came back to reveal the aspects of the story which also made it heart wrenching. It is a different kind of zombie flick with a story that drives the movie as Train to Busan.

Recommendation:

The Recommendation is 4 out of 5. It is the highest that I am going to give because althought I am saying that it is a magnificient movie, the payoffs were a bit office. Sitting with my wife, she kind of guessed certain things within the first thirty minutes of the movie. The only thing that could be accepted is that the pull-offs were meant to be obvious. This review will not contain spoilers, but watch the movie and it could be seen to what is being referred.

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
