Bridge of Spies, directed and produced by, the man, Steven Spielberg has teamed up with Tom Hangs once again to tell a riveting tale of how far gambling with deceit and honor will go.
Here is a synopsis from IMDB:
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captures U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers’ only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. Donovan boards a plane to Berlinn, hoping to win the young man’s freedom through a prisoner exchange. If all goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), the convicted spy who Donovan defended in court.
This movie is great collaboration between the two movie GIANTS. Tom Hanks is a firm insurance lawyer that plays the embodiment of what it means to be an American when even everyone else has forgotten. He goes through hell and high water and risk his own career in trying to properly defend an accused spy on American soil. The turmoil he faced even from his own colleagues while portraying true “can do” American attitude is this true character’s winning attribute. He embodies the hopes and dreams of immigrants as well as homegrown citizens. My favorite line from the move is this when the agent is questioning Hanks’ boy scout attitude:
“You are Agent Hoffman. German extraction? (agent replies: yea so). My name is Donovan, Irish, both sides, mother and father. I am Irish. You are German; but what makes us both Americans? Just one thing. Only one. The rule book. We call it The Constitution. And we believe in the rules. That is only what makes us Americans.”
The beauty of the movie is that it mirrors repetitive on going issue of what it is to be an American. It questions how far does American Rules extend to non-American citizens who living in American. Although this is happening during the early stages of the Cold War, some of the lessons could be heeded and examples could be followed by some the good ole’ American Boy Scouts.
In conclusion, Bridge of Spies is truly a must see with a satisfying conclusion that an movie with good story telling will provide. Please, join the site and leave a response!
